Dental bonding
In this procedure a very thin layer of ceramic is applied to teeth which are discoloured, cracked or chipped. The technique may also be used to change the shape of teeth, narrow gaps between teeth, or to protect sensitive areas exposed, when gums recede due to aging. Anaesthesia is generally not required unless the tooth is decayed.
The dentist will apply a thin layer of resin to the affected tooth or teeth, and harden this surface by the application of an ultra-violet light. The layer is then shaped as required. The colour can be exactly matched to that of the surrounding teeth.
The procedure can be performed with one visit. Treatment normally takes no more than an hour. A further advantage is that less enamel is removed than is the case with the fitting of crowns or veneers.
