Treatment of gum disease
Gum disease is also known as gingivitis or in more severe cases, periodontitis. Bacteria can form in the deep pockets around the tooth below the gum line, and infection may occur, causing discomfort and bad breath. If unchecked, tooth loss can result.
The dentist will use special instruments to remove the infected matter below the gum line. The tooth is then de-scaled and the root area is ‘planed’ or smoothed, to eliminate any pits which can trap plaque and bacteria.
The dentist will advise patients on a home oral hygiene programme to avoid recurrence. He may also prescribe an antimicrobial rinse.
